Maplewood United Methodist Church - Summer Associate VISTA
Maplewood United Methodist Church, in partnership with the Community Unity Center, supports the LifeWise STL Summer Learning Program, which serves elementary‑age students and their families in the Maplewood‑Richmond Heights community. The program addresses summer learning loss through six weeks of literacy enrichment while also combating food insecurity by providing daily meals to children from low‑income households. Four Summer Associate VISTAs expand the program’s capacity by supporting classroom instruction, leading enrichment activities, and strengthening aftercare and community partnerships.
The key responsibilities of the Summer Associate VISTAs will be:
Peer Counselors support daily educational programming by assisting with literacy instruction, leading Harambee activities, managing classroom setup, and helping with behavior management.
Aftercare Coordinators oversee the 3–6pm extended care program, ensuring a safe, structured environment that enables working families to participate.
Build community capacity by cultivating partnerships with local restaurants, businesses, and organizations for meal donations and enrichment activities.
Support overall program operations through preparation, communication, and hands‑on assistance across instructional and aftercare settings.
