Safe Homes for Elderly and Disabled (SHED) - Summer Associate VISTA

Safe Homes for Elderly and Disabled (SHED) partners with the School District of University City to support summer learning through career‑aligned, hands‑on projects such as home repairs and construction internships that earn high school credit. The organization aims to expand this model by integrating career exploration into academic programming for approximately 400 students, addressing both summer learning loss and early exposure to career pathways. SHED also seeks to build a coordinated disaster‑response system with the district to support families affected by severe weather, with the Summer Associate dedicating the first four weeks to career‑focused programming and the second four weeks to disaster‑response planning.

The key responsibilities of the Summer Associate will be:

  •  Coordinate career‑exploration experiences aligned with academic projects for students from 1st grade through high school, while supporting paperwork and recordkeeping for participants, including those in paid internships.

  • Research and pursue grant opportunities that strengthen career‑exploration and summer‑learning initiatives.

  • Assess citywide and school‑district disaster‑response preparedness by identifying gaps, recommending improvements, and collaborating with partners to help integrate needed changes into policy.
