Take the Jump into VISTA

You never really know what your service year will look like before it happens. I had little clue about the scope of capacity-building. I did not know that creating a solid budget is really important; but most of all, I never anticipated falling in love with service (yes, really).

A year of service was never something that I planned on. Service was always a side activity that kept me grounded in the community, but I never thought about devoting an entire year to it. Then I found the right opportunity...and jumped in. Now that you are thinking about taking the same jump, here are few nuggets of advice that you might find useful:

1. Oh the ways you will grow.

We all enter our VISTA years with different goals and expectations. Whether you are taking a year off before graduate school, using your time to give back to the community, or just need some time to figure out what to do with your life, you will find something in VISTA.

During your year, you will be asked to take on projects and responsibilities that you’ve never thought about. Worried that you aren’t qualified? No problem! Your bosses will help teach you everything that you need to know to succeed. Just be ready to learn.

2. The VISTA office is truly your best friend.

From the moment you agree to service, they are ready to help in any way you could need. If you are like me and are from out of town/state, finding housing can be a true struggle. Thankfully, the VISTA office has a contract with 3 housing companies to knock your rent down by $150 per month. Think about what you can do with an extra $150 each month.

Countless times, I have walked into the office stressed from various projects only to walk out confident and energized. They also do a great job helping budget, filing taxes and exploring the city. Plus, at the end of your service, you receive a $6,000 education award that can help chip away at student loans. Oh, and did I mention that your loans and interest are deferred during your year? Pretty sweet!

3. St. Louis is truly one of a kind.

St. Louis is a city like no other. This city is forged by community and holds dearly its culture & beauty. VISTA provides every opportunity to explore everything that we have to offer. St. Louis has the most free attractions in the U.S. outside of Washington D.C. and the #1 free zoo in the nation (not-so-humble brag). Don’t just take my word for it. Check out all of the fun attractions the Lou has to offer.

Yet, aside from the physical beauty of the city, what is most attractive about the Lou is the recognition that we need each other, that we all rely on each other to succeed. Not many places hold such a bond and it endeared me to this city the moment I moved here.

4. Whether you’re local or from out of town, there’s no cooler way to get to know St. Louis.

The next 12 months could be the most memorable of your life. You are about to see the everyday effects of poverty on communities. You will hear story after story during your time with VISTA. Listen to them.

Like was discussed earlier, this year is all about growth. If you allow your heart to be open to your new community, you will leave your service year as a stronger, more understanding person. In the end, isn’t that what we truly want? Take the chance, find the site that fits you best and let yourself enter into service for and with others.
